In the spring of 2020, we at FocusGate Pictures were taught the hardest lessons of resilience and persistence through filmmaking amidst the unexpected trials and tribulations brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Founders Matt and Tom, whilst on their BA honours Film & TV course at Warwickshire College, embarked on a journey that would not only test their mettle but also their filmmaking acumen. A meticulously planned final short film piece, complete with hired actors and booked locations, was suddenly left hanging in limbo by the unforeseen outbreak.
However, adversity often sparks creativity. Rising to the challenge, Matt Shaw, the co-owner of FocusGate, penned a compelling new script for a short entitled “Developed in Red”. The concept was chilling yet intriguing: "A man awakens in an ominous room, confined to a chair and plunged into a state of sheer terror. Surrounded by scattered photos, he frantically attempts to decipher his grim circumstances."
With an impending deadline, the urgency to bring this vision to life was palpable. The team ingeniously transformed one of the music studios at the college into an eerie prison for our protagonist. Red LED lights, suspended from the ceiling, bathed the room in a haunting glow reminiscent of a photographer's darkroom. Additionally, the team’s decision to incorporate practical effects, such as the sugar glass bottle that shatters dramatically in one scene, added tactile realism to the cinematic experience.
"Developed in Red" stands as a testament to FocusGate Pictures' dedication and adaptability. It epitomizes the spirit of filmmakers who, even when faced with the most daunting of obstacles, harness their collective expertise to craft a masterpiece.
In retrospect, the challenges posed by the pandemic became the catalyst for a project that showcased the raw talent and resourcefulness of Matt, Tom, and the FocusGate team. "Developed in Red" isn’t just a short film; it's a reflection of perseverance, creativity, and the enduring spirit of cinema.
