At FocusGate Pictures, we’re always thrilled to work on projects that celebrate creativity, passion, and artistry. Our recent project with Coventry-based rock band PUSH was no exception. Leading the project, Jack and his bandmates Divyansh, James, and Ryan, brought us on board to help capture their first-ever theatre performance. With the support of the Criterion Theatre crew, Jack guided the direction of the show, crafting an artistic style and theme that reflected PUSH’s unique blend of raw rock energy and experimental sounds.
A Vision Born from Collaboration
From the very beginning, this project was a partnership. PUSH had a clear vision for their film—a raw, up-close depiction of their first theatre show, captured with an intimate lens that highlighted their dynamic performance. During pre-production we worked closely with the band and Jack to define the visual tone of the film. Rehearsals were essential to discovering the visual language that would best represent their unique sound, particularly their blend of rock and experimental psychedelia.
We wanted the visuals to complement their music, which often strays into uncharted territory. This meant playing with angles, light, and movement to create a sense of immersion for the audience. Our goal was to make viewers feel like they were right there in the theatre, caught in the magic of the moment.
The Concert: Blood, Sweat, and Psychedelic Vibes
The Criterion Theatre provided a cozy yet electric atmosphere for the performance. With a shoe-string budget, PUSH poured their hearts into the show, showcasing unreleased and improvised material while incorporating stunning visual effects. Our cameras worked tirelessly to capture the energy of the band and the engagement of the audience.
We leaned into the raw aesthetic, using close-up shots and dynamic movements to highlight the band's intensity. To reflect the experimental nature of their music, we added subtle hints of psychedelia in post-production, blending light flares, color shifts, and layered visuals to create an immersive viewing experience.
The Final Cut
The result is Live At The Criterion—a 40-minute film that goes beyond a standard concert recording. It’s a snapshot of a band at a pivotal moment in their journey, full of grit, creativity, and passion. It was an honor to help PUSH bring their vision to life and share their music with a wider audience.
